Northern Ireland motorists fond of consuming alcohol at home may want to use the New Year to "re-think" how much they drink – and avoid the risk of incurring a costly car insurance claim -after new revelations from the government's Know Your Limits campaign.
Its research highlights that many Northern Ireland car insurance customers could be in danger of unwittingly driving over the limit as they serve themselves more generous measures in the house than they would get in a bar.
The researchers' experiments showed that "home barmen" pour themselves an average 128 per cent more alcohol than normal pub measures. The average person serves themselves 57ml – double what they would be given in a pub.
Public health minister Gillian Merron deemed it "worrying" to find out just how much more people may be unwittingly pouring for themselves and their friends at home on a regular basis.
"Over time, such over-generosity may backfire and harm your health. If you want to minimise your risk of diseases like cancer, heart disease and stroke, it's worth paying attention to the size of your measures," she continued. "New Year is a good time to re-think how much you drink."
